Ahh, the delicious picture perfect Raspberry Turnover fresh from the bakery.  Or in this case, three weeks old.

A friend of mine bought the pastry as a treat for me and I put it in my tote bag to enjoy for breakfast the next morning.  Then I forgot about it.

Two weeks later whilein Paris, I called Bill to ask if he’d seen it because I suddenly remembered I hadn’t eaten it.  Nobody knew where it was and nobody would confess to eating it.  I was a bit worried about what it would look like (or smell like) when we finally found it.  But again, I forgot about it.

Then one day we were heading to the market and I went to get my tote bag, and there inside was my turnover.  The same morbid curiosity that drives you to smell milk you know has turned sour drove me to look in the bag.  I expected to find a forest of mold and I expected my nose to be assaulted.  Instead I found a little work of art that looked like it came out of the oven that morning.  I did not take my experiment so far as to taste it, but I think it would have been edible.

The only explanation for this is our dependence on chemical food additives.  Next time you think about how much eating organic costs, think about the three week old picture perfect turnover.  It’s impossible for that to be healthy.

  2. Ok now that is just scary!!! We have been shocked at how veggies and fruits from our organic box do not last nearly as long as regular produce… Scarrrrrry!
