I’ve gone to the Dogs! Home made Dogfood!

Meet Bernardo.  He’s 18 pounds of German attitude (he’s a dachshund) and an adorable member of our family.  A couple years ago you may remember there was an incident where tainted wheat that was used for dogfood ended up killing many pets.  So, I decided that if I eat local produce and fresh veggies he can too.  I couldn’t bear to think of feeding him something that might kill him (have you ever read the ingredients in dog food? A lot of garbage and not very much food). You may think it’s expensive, time consuming or even crazy to cook for a dog, but his food is about $6 a month and it’s healthy.  My vet loves it.  And about once a month I spend 20 – 30 minutes (much of which is downtime) cooking his food.

Bernie’s Turkey Delight!

1lb ground turkey

2 cups quick cook barley

1 cup chicken broth

1 bag cole slaw mix (shredded cabbage)

1 16 oz bag of mixed vegetables

1 14 oz can diced tomatoes
Brown the turkey in a dutch oven  over medium heat using a spoon or potato masher to break it up.  Add chicken broth and barley.  Reduce to simmer and cover for 20 minutes.  Add remaining ingredients.  Cover and simmer for additional 20 minutes.
That’s it, you have cheap healthy dog food and a dog that adores you!  Come on, who could resist a wagging tail?

  1. that is awesome. I also cook for my dogs. Curious how many days does this recipe last and do you add any other vitamins, calcium, etc to help balance what they need?

  2. That’s a great point I forgot to bring up. I split the batch into freezer containers that are the right size for about 4 days of food for him. Whenever we reach the end of one container we thaw the next one out and I have food for a month.

What kind of dog do you have?

  3. great post! i think it’s wonderful to cook for your pets. i treat my dog to home cooked food as often as possible. yours is too cute!

  4. I’m so glad you agree! Some people think I’m nuts but they simply don’t understand. My dog is never going to wreck my car or run up my cell phone bill. Why not cook for him LOL!

  5. we have 2 chihuahua’s..they love it! we cook it up in crock-pots once we get all the spices in it smells wonderful! sometimes we get jealous cuz it smells so good….but we add extra good stuff for them that we dont necessarily eat lol (heart, etc) People too think we are nuts…but oh well..ha
